Fitness Cheat Sheet: Piloxing
If Pilates and boxing had a baby, it would be Piloxing, a muscle-toning, calorie-burning, and core-focused workout designed to make you sleek, in shape, and feeling oh-so-sexy. Like its other trendy fitness program counterparts such as SoulCycle, classes are set to a high-energy, fun environment—though Piloxing distinguishes itself by catering to women.
How It Works
Created by Swedish-born Viveca Jensen, whose credits include professional dancer, master Pilates instructor, trained boxer, award-winning bodybuilder, and celeb trainer, Piloxing stems from the speed, power, cardio, and quickness of boxing fused with the sculpting and flexibility of a Pilates workout and the dynamism of dance. No two classes are identical, though all use signature weighted gloves (1/2 pound each), which help, among other aspects, to tone arms. That Jensen set out to “physically and mentally empower women through fitness,” so we girls can obtain a “powerful self-image” through Piloxing leaves a lasting impression on us as well.
Who Does It
Piloxing has caught the attention of celebs including Hilary Duff and Alexis Bledel (remember Rory from Gilmore Girls?!), and has been mentioned in magazines like Elle, Women’s Health, and O, The Oprah Magazine.
Where to Find It
While it made its debut in L.A., Piloxing instructors can now be found throughout the U.S., Europe, and more; find a complete list here. In fact, a Piloxing academy launched a few years back to educate/license fitness instructors on the program; more than 5,000 trainers in 30-plus countries are now certified. Those who can’t get to a Piloxing class in their area can spring for Piloxing DVDs, CDs, and workout attire (piloxing.com).
