Bye-Bye Baby Weight: Expert Tips for Losing Weight After Pregnancy
Losing the baby weight after you’ve delivered that little bundle of joy can often feel impossible. You have less time than ever before, you’re exhausted, and you are no longer your number one priority, so shedding the pounds is a lot harder than it ever was before. There are steps you can take to lose weight after pregnancy in a healthy and non-stressful way and we tapped into Shannon Higgins, founder of Studio Barre, to get her expert tips for saying bye-bye baby weight!
1. Take baby steps, don’t try and go all in and jump right back into the fitness routine you had before getting pregnant. You need be patient and allow your body to slowly get used to not being pregnant, and the additional stresses of being a new mom.
2. Start with a walk around the block with your baby in tow, and step it up to a few times a week or increase your distance when you feel ready for it. For anyone that wants to get back into a workout regimen, whether they just gave birth or are just in a rut, can benefit from some light cardio. You will ultimately be reminded of how great it makes you feel to get up and move around.
3. Get out and take a class and don’t feel bad about spending time away from your newborn or little one. It will ultimately make you a better parent by giving you time to yourself, doing something good for yourself and your body. Taking a little break from the hectic life of mothering a new baby isn’t a bad thing! It’s a tough job and you deserve it.
4. One of the best ways to get back in shape after baby is to stay in shape and not neglect your activity level or fitness routine while you’re pregnant. So many of our students who stick to their classes during their pregnancy whip back into their selves (and even emerge looking better than before they were pregnant) after giving birth.
5. Set goals to give you something to work toward, but make them realistic and don’t focus solely on the scale. Instead, make a goal of getting into your favorite pair of jeans by this date, or making it a goal to go on three walks a week, or to squeeze in a 60-minute plank every afternoon when you put the baby down.
