Exercise: It’s Better Together
If you’re in a committed relationship, odds are you made the decision to share your lives because you enjoy doing things together. But once you’re in the “go to work, do the chores, take care of the family” drill, many couples forget to carve out the together time that first sparked their relationship.
Working out together is an excellent way to take care of your own health and rekindle your romantic relationship, and studies show[1] that couples that exercise together have happier and more lasting relationships.
It’s Easier Together
Let’s face it. Working out alone can be lonely, and there are probably many people at your gym or yoga class who don’t come close to your definition of a workout buddy. That’s why exercising with someone you already like and trust is such a good idea. You will motivate each other, laugh together at mistakes, and revel in your successes, with the confidence a best friend can give you.
And when the most important person in your life is cheering you on, it’s easier to stay on track and do your best. This is especially true if you’re just getting back into a fitness routine. Can’t lift that weight? The person you trust more than anyone has your back and will help you reach the next plateau.
Different Workouts? No Problem
Don’t sweat it if you love Pilates and he likes his boxing class (or vice versa). There’s no need to spend every exercise minute together but do make time for a workout date every week or two. Try ice or roller-skating, join a dance class, take a hike or go rock climbing, take tennis lessons, sign up for a charitable run or fitness challenge, or learn a new fitness skill together: you’ll both benefit from changing your fitness routines and you’ll rediscover the fun of experiencing new activities and adventures together.
The Rewards are So Sweet
Many of us like to reward ourselves with a new outfit or special treat when we achieve a fitness milestone –or just have a super workout. Let’s put the elliptical on pause for a minute and think about how delicious those rewards can be when you share them with the one you love. A dream weekend at a spa. Shopping together for a new fitter-you wardrobe. A special dinner at your favorite restaurant. The possibilities are endless and best of all you’ll share them together.
Fall in Love All Over Again
Exercise can be sweaty and it also can be sexy. Your pulse races, you’re short of breath, you catch your workout partner’s eye and imagine the after-workout possibilities. And of course, a fitness routine leads to a healthier, sexier body and we all know where that can lead!
