3 Essential Oils to Boost Relaxation
We have zero time for stress. We have Zoom meetings to join, families to tend to, homes to clean, dinners to cook (ahem, order in). Busy schedules for sure. Like we stated, we don’t have time for anxiety and the like.
But it happens.
So when it does, we turn to the natural healing properties of essential oils to help tackle stress. And, more specifically, the following three essential oils to create a stronger sense of calm.*
3 Essential Oils to Tackle Stress
1. Lavender Oil
When one thinks of essential oils, lavender almost always tops the list. A MedicalNewsToday article cited a few studies linking lavender oil as an anxiety treatment—in particular, a mice-related one suggested that linalool, a compound in lavender, showed similar effects on the brain as common anxiety medications. The article noted, however, that additional research is necessary before any conclusions can be made on the oil’s true efficacy.
How to Use: Add a few droplets to a diffuser. Or, combine the lavender oil with a bit of carrier oil and incorporate into your favorite lotions or warm bath. We also like this tip by essential oil powerhouse doTERRA: Add a few drops of lavender oil to pillows, bedding or bottoms of feet before you hit the hay.
Scent: floral, light, herbaceous
Product to Try: doTERRA Lavender Oil, $30.67
2. Neroli Oil
Research claims neroli oil, also known as orange blossom oil, potentially helps those dealing with anxiety, high blood pressure, pain and depression. Several writeups on this oil propose that breathing in neroli oil prompts the brain to release serotonin (aka, “the happy chemical”) and lowers the stress hormone known as cortisol. A 2015 article in the American Journal of Nursing Science claims research backs up the idea that aromatherapy with neroli oil possesses a calming effect and can aid with insomnia.
How to Use: steam inhalation or a diffuser
Scent: airy and light; floral with hints of citrus
Product to Try: Plant Therapy Neroli Essential Oil, $44.95
3. Frankincense Oil
Frankincense is another revered essential oil, much of its popularity due to its versatility (therapeutic benefits run the gamut from aiding in digestion and respiratory conditions to boosting immunity). A 2008 study reported a hand massage performed with a blend of frankincense, bergamot and lavender oils helped diminish anxiety, depression and pain in terminal cancer patients.
How to Use: in a diffuser; or dilute frankincense oil before massaging onto hands or applying to bottoms of feet
Scent: spicy and musky, with woody undertones
Product: PANGEA Essential Oil Frankincense, $36
