Boosting Immunity Naturally
We recently divulged that seasonal change can affect our complexion—and have also determined that the start of cooler weather isn’t necessarily the greatest for our immune system either. Hello fall, hello cold and flu season.
So when temperatures dip and we feel a cold coming on, we turn to these natural cures from The Lodge at Woodloch’s master herbalist Nathaniel Whitmore.
Nathaniel’s suggestion: Embrace diaphoretic herbs. How so? We share a quick rundown here:
- Fast facts: Diaphoretic herbs, aka, sweat-inducing herbs, help promote perspiration, eliminate toxins, and lower our body temperature when we’re with fever.
- Examples: Herbs considered in this category include mint, ginger, garlic, ginseng, and cinnamon.
- How to use: Take diaphoretic herbs warm; Nathaniel’s recommendation is to take them as a hot “tea,” accompanied by, if possible, a shower, sauna, and nap under a down comforter.
Other diaphoretic herbs to try, per Nathaniel:
- Osha: You may better know this diaphoretic herb, ideal for cold treatments, as bear root. Take it hot or as a lozenge.
- Echinacea is also your friend. A natural remedy, it’s best as a tincture from the fresh root.
- Oregano essential oil diluted in olive oil. Bonus: You can probably find these ingredients right in your pantry.
