How Timely – Example of Spa and Hospital Integration in Today’s Paper!
by Susie Ellis, SpaFinder Insider
This morning I came across this very interesting article while reading my New York Times on the treadmill. (After 20 hours in an airplane seat, it felt good to get moving). The title?
Didn’t I just yesterday say in my blog that hospitals and spas are coming together? It is always a good feeling when you get quick verification that you are on the right track.
Here is the scoop. According to this article written by Anemona Hartocollis, Donna Karan has donated $850,000 to Beth Israel Medical Center, through her foundation for a year-long experiment here in New York. It will essentially combine Eastern and Western healing methods by bringing yoga teachers to the hospital to work with non-terminal patients. An area of the ninth floor cancer ward will be remodeled, using feng shui principles, and nurses will be trained in relaxation techniques.
As Ms. Hartocollis goes on to say, “the Karan-Beth Israel project will have a celebrated donor turn a hospital into a testing ground for a trendy, medically controversial notion: that yoga, meditation and aromatherapy can enhance regimens of chemotherapy and radiation.”
I say hooray for Donna Karan, for the hospital, the patients and the spa industry! Integrating yoga and meditation is a good start. Hopefully massage and spa cuisine won’t be far behind! Now, if we could just get them to feng shui the entire building…
