Ask Susie: Infrared Saunas
Question: What are the benefits of an infrared sauna?
Answer: The infrared sauna – which seems to be gaining in popularity lately – is an alternative to the traditional sauna, which is usually heated by electricity, wood, or gas to 150 – 180 degrees or higher.
An infrared light can warm objects without warming the air between it and the object (hospitals use them to warm newborns), and infrared saunas allow you to sweat without feeling the intense heat of a regular sauna. As a result you avoid the uncomfortable sensation of hot air through your nose.
I find that they cause me to sweat in about the same amount of time as a regular sauna, and they’re more comfortable. They are often a good alternative for us as we age.
