A Peek into the Future of Spa, Wellness, Aesthetics, and Hospitals

I was seeing the future…that’s how I I felt after listening to the speakers at the medical tourism conference here in Manila. There was one doctor in particular who spoke for almost two hours and I never once checked my watch. The information was simply fascinating.

Dr. Robert Keller from the Keller Institute in Monterey, California spoke to us here in the Philippines about the cutting-edge things happening in health, beauty, and longevity. He is an aesthetic surgeon and a big believer in genetic testing as well as stem cell banking to store ones own healthy cells for potential future use. http://www.kmimedical.com/
One point he made is that medicine is going through a major paradigm shift. Here is how he explained it:
PHASES IN MEDICINE
1. Surgery phase (during the 1800’s) – operating and managing pain
2. Internal Medicine (during the 1900’s) – think pharmaceuticals
3. Protective Medicine (after 2003) – post Human Genome Project, now it is about getting cells to do what we want them to do

Dr. Keller went on to explain that essentially we are shifting from reactive medicine to proactive medicine. We will be using diagnostic tools to catch things so early (10 years or more in many cases) that you can resolve problems before they even show up. Another way to describe it is a shift toward wellness and away from disease.
This is huge for our spa industry in ways I hadn’t suspected. More about why in the next blog…
