Boost Awareness of Men’s Health this June
This June, let’s take a pause to focus on Men’s health, recognize the men in our lives, husbands, dads, sons, family and friends to understand what we can do to help them on their wellness journey.
Heart Health Matters
Staggering numbers indicate that men really need to focus on heart health. According to the CDC, heart disease is the leading cause of death for men in the United States, killing 357,761 men in 2019—that’s about 1 in every 4 male deaths. So how can we examine and help to decrease that number to improve men’s health?
Take an EKG
An electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) will help the doctor detect and analyze results instantly. EKG results are immediate so there’s a lot of transparency as to whether proper blood flow is circulating in the left and right atrial chambers. If there’s anything off on the exam, the Dr will order an echogram which will deliver all the necessary answers. EKG’s aren’t part of the normal mix for many at a standard check up, but it is something you can request if this might be a concern to you.
Focus on Movement
Walking alone will make your heart pump. As we become digitally dependent and in some cases stuck to desk jobs, we seem to forget to move around. Our bodies are not taking those 5 mile walks it used to 50 years ago nor are they engaging in the same level of activity as past generations. Make an effort to move around, pick up a hobby and give it a go. There are a lot of soccer teams, tennis courts, biking groups and even running clubs out there that are easy to join. If that isn’t your thing, there are also a ton of videos available to take classes at home. Peloton, bodybuilding.com, bodyfx.com, the options are boundless.
Reduce Alcohol Consumption
If you like to drink, you might want to take another look at frequency and ways to minimize alcohol intake. Speak to the doctor for recommendations. According to Hopkinsmedicine.org, excessive alcohol intake can lead to high blood pressure, heart failure or stroke so it’s a good idea to consider moderation and to really assess where you stand.
Seek Stress Relief to Improve Men’s Health
While exercise is a great way to reduce stress, there are other modalities that can make a big difference in men’s health. Massage and acupuncture are two popular ways to reduce stress and improve health. Both alleviate stress, relax muscles, improve circulation, energy and lower heart rate/pressure.
This June, share this blog and these tips with someone you love to benefit their wellness.
