The 30-Day Eating Plan—Maximizing Brain Function through Nutrition (an excerpt from Chapter 6 of 30 Days to a Better Brain)
“When it comes to maintaining and even enhancing brain health, choosing the right foods is critically important. The latest studies have shown that the ability to retain healthy brain cells as well as increase the number of new cells and neuronal connections via neurogenesis is significantly influenced by the foods we eat every day. The quality of these brain cells is just as important as the quantity, and the choices we make at the table can either support brain function or work against it.
Caring for both body and mind through nutrition increases your potential for remaining intellectually engaged now and for years to come. What’s more, an eating program filled with nutrient-rich, high-quality foods will increase your chances for avoiding some of the most common diseases that can affect brain health as well as your potential longevity: obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
This chapter provides everything you need to know to make the best food choices that support brain health. This plan is not geared for weight loss, because building new brain cells requires eating plenty of the right foods. Consuming too few calories will actually starve the brain. When the brain starts to feel that it is getting low on fuel, it drives you to find a quick source in the form of carbohydrates; we experience this drive as food cravings. At the same time, the brain forces what we call a starvation response, which causes the immediate storage of food as body fat, so that it will be available to the brain at another time. This strategy works for the brain but not for the belly. However, you might find that by feeding your brain regularly and improving your food choices, you may also drop a few pounds.
You’ll see that on this plan we’re not going to ask you to make drastic changes to your diet: you won’t have to go through the kitchen cabinets and throw everything out. Nor are we recommending a specific diet that everyone should follow—that simply isn’t the Canyon Ranch way. We believe that every individual has specific needs based on genetics, medical history, health status, eating preferences, and lifestyle, and there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all diet. What’s more, we believe in making incremental modifications to the way you eat right now that will last a lifetime. Each week for the next four weeks, you’ll learn how to make one simple change to your diet that can improve brain health. By the end of the month, you’ll be able to pull these changes together, and your cumulative learning will be effortlessly incorporated into your daily dietary routine”
