Hammam Heaven at the Spa at the Mandarin Oriental, Las Vegas
The luxurious Mandarin Oriental Las Vegas is quite something to behold and from what I had heard, the spa’s authentic, Turkish hammam is the highlight of the 27,000-square facility. On a recent visit to the spa at Mandarin Oriental,I knew I had to give it a try.
Unlike many of today’s spa treatments, hammam was historically experienced in the company of others or what we now call “social spa-ing.” The Spa at Mandarin Oriental can accommodate groups of five of your closest friends with a hammam party in the comfort of this private treatment area. It’s also great for bridal parties.
Upon entering the hammam, I am struck by the tiny, blue-lit stars embellishing the walls and ceiling and by just how stunning this chamber is. My treatment started when my therapist wrapped me in the traditional hammam garment (essentially a pashmina), and I settled onto the surprisingly comfortable, heated belly stone. She then began to exfoliate my entire body from head to toe (sans the face) with a large, gentle mitt that sloughed away my dry skin. Soon I was enveloped in a mountain of soft, soapy bubbles and rubbed clean. After washing my hair, my therapist finished off the treatment with another water ritual, alternating between pouring hot water and icy cold water over my head and torso.
After drying off, I put on my plush robe and was ushered into the coed lounge where I was wrapped up in towels and tucked into a warmed, reclining bed overlooking the Las Vegas Strip. Within minutes I slipped into the deepest, most relaxing nap I have probably ever had.
Afterwards I noticed how incredibly smooth my skin was, and a friend noted I had “Barbie legs” because they were actually shining! Hammam was an incredible new spa experience, and I would absolutely try it again − a great treatment to bring in a new season. What better way to start the year with a clean slate?
