Olympian Ladies Pave Path Forward
The trials are already stirring up emotions for our Olympians. As Simone Biles encourages Suni Lee, we witness what it means to be an athlete, a champion and a woman. It isn’t about having a great day every day but it is about perseverance in the face of obstacles.
I’d rather regret the risks that didn’t work than the chances I didn’t take at all– Simone Biles
As we surge towards a new time in the USA and abroad, the Olympic women’s teams continue to remind us that adversity can be overcome through compassion and teamwork. Though you may have an off day, continue with courage and watch the cards fall where they may.
Biles, 27, is the oldest to compete in the gymnastics team. Women athletes continue to qualify as the age range diversifies in several sections, new and old. Breakdancing, an Olympic newbie, welcomes B-girl Sunny Choi, 35. Choi surprised herself with the qualification and is excited to be heading to Paris for this sport. Sha’Carri Richardson, ineligible in 2020, is now on her way to Paris. Her family, especially her grandmother, cheered from the stands as she qualified. Pivotal and poignant, it is evidence that when one falters, they must continue to persevere. We learn from our mistakes and try once again
We must recognize how much more traction the women’s teams receive now than they did before. Once in awhile the Jackie Joyner’s of the world received a shout out, today it looks like we have elite women’s athletes receiving a fair share of media attention and accolades. Biles and team member Jordan Chiles, both mental health advocates, tout the importance of being present for their team members.
“I think for me now is just being able to help my teammates in a way to make sure they’re on the right track or whatever, and making sure that they feel good within themselves.” says Chiles.
As we head towards Paris, we wish the ladies much success and hope that they bring home the gold. However, for many little girls watching at home, possibilities are in motion and glass ceilings continue to crumble.
